'I believe there is a female assassin operating internationally, and she's targeted a number of influential people. She doesn't have a signature, but she certainly has style and I don't know who or what is behind her, but I don't think she's slowing down and just that interested me, I guess'- Eve, Killing Eve.
BBC America's series, Killing Eve, has garnered thousands of fans around the globe for its feisty and funny drama involving an MI5 operative and a quirky assassin. It is filmed in various locations around Europe and if you can tear your eyes away from the drama, you may notice iconic buildings and areas are not shown, as the filming is done from that of a local's point of view.
Now, let us guide you through some of the key locations in the Killing Eve story...
Paris is home to our sassy assassin Villanelle - her apartment is in the upmarket 6th arrondissement. In the series we see her walking through Rue Guénégaud and Rue Mazarine to her apartment block where many scenes are filmed (the inside of her chic apartment is actually a set in a London studio). In a later episode, we see her confronting Konstantin within the 18th-century galleries of Place Vendôme. The only other key Killing Eve filming location, is on the Paris streets or on the Metro.
Paris has so much more to offer than its iconic buildings and tasty food including the I Love You wall which is the city's linguistic guide to the international language of amour where tourists from all over the world write I love you, the museum of the History of Medicine, the secret apartment built at the top of the Eiffel tower (who knew!) and Rue Cremieux which is arguably one of the most Instagram friendly streets in the city with brightly coloured houses on a cobbled street of perfection. One for the gram!
In the first episode, we see Eve travel to Tuscany to carry out her next job where we see Villanelle travelling through the Tuscan countryside on a motorbike which of course is typical Villanelle. Of course, we all know of Tuscany's beautiful rolling hills, it's stunning churches, statues and monuments, but beyond that what else is there do? Well, glad you asked because we recommend a variety of activities to make the most of the area including renting a bicycle and exploring the villages in Chiani, becoming a Tuscan wine expert by having a morning learning all about Brunello and Vernaccia di San Gimignano (specialists of wild boar) and learning to cook Tuscan dishes at a cookery class.
You can also visit Pisa, Siena, Lucca and Saturnia and its thermal baths. You could ride a steam train around Tuscany, hunt for fields of sunflowers and explore Monte Amiata, the highest mount in the south of Tuscany. It is also in Italy where we see her staring at the little girl eating ice-cream, that was filmed in Bat Garibaldi which is in the village of Colle di Val d'Elsa which is northwest of Siena. But it is MEANT to be Vienna leading us to..
Although the credits say the ice-cream scene in a café between Villanelle and the little girl says it was filmed in Vienna, it was actually filmed in Siena. Let's pretend we are none the wiser and our favourite female assassin was, in fact, enjoying a coffee in a café there. Vienna is a fantastic option for a city break, especially in December when there are lots of Christmas markets but is a great option all year round with things to do such as outdoor swimming, wineries, coffee roasteries and more! Wiener Riesenrad is Vienna's equivalent of the London Eye, it was built in 1897 and feature 15 gondolas and at over 200ft tall, it is a fantastic way to see the city of Vienna from above.
If you are in the mood for shopping, then Naschmarket which was built in the 16th century could be the place for you. Huge tip-keep an empty stomach ready for your adventure there and take cash! There is so much local food to choose from and they are all delicious from sauerkraut to cheese, a culinary adventure awaits you. Veganista is the cities first vegan ice cream parlour, with 18 flavours to choose from. For wine lovers take the Weingut Cobenzl tasting tour, Austrian wine is described as light, fresh and oh so fruity and there are 700 hectares of vines within the city of Vienna. The tour itself is great value for money and involves a tour of the vineyard and you get to taste six of the wines and if you go on a clear day you may be lucky enough to see the River Danube in the distance.
The series also takes us to the city of Berlin where some of the outdoor Killing Eve scenes were filmed around the Bode Museum along the River Spree and also along Friedrichstrasse Station. Berlin itself is a city reborn from the confines of its wall. It is fresh, modern, quirky with lots of parks, lakes, cafes and bars and it is well known for its nightlife. If you go during summer you might be interested in the bathing lakes of Brandenburg, a north-eastern state surrounding Berlin. It has 3000 lakes, some of which are better for swimming and some for sunbathing next to! Many of which have places you can eat and drink and make the most of the location and weather.
If you want to see Berlin from a different angle there is a River Spree which cruises you through the centre of Berlin and you can also rent kayaks for similar tours. The cities (and countries) first premium luxury cinema features a welcome cocktail, valet parking and a doorman. It also features an illuminated glass ceiling and very comfortable seats. Liquidrom is a futuristic spa where you may float in a pool of salt water with music playing under the water! Of course, the history of Berlin must be mentioned such as Checkpoint Charlie, The DDR Museum which offers an interesting insight into the daily life in the Eastern block and The Bebel Platz, the famous sight of the Nazi book burning campaign and the Fuhrerbunker Parking Lot which is the bunker Hitler lived in.
