Overview

Ontario is a vast region combining cosmopolitan cities with the remarkable Canadian countryside. The province is home to around 250,000 lakes, the mighty Niagara Falls, endless forests and idyllic lakeside beaches. It's also home to historic and cosmopolitan cities, providing plenty of opportunity to sightsee, shop, dine and museum-hop. Luxury holidays in Ontario offer a little bit of everything.

The province of Ontario is a sprawling playground of unique experiences. In the capital city of Canada, Ottawa, you'll find world renowned museums and galleries, lots of parks and gardens, and stunning architecture. Stroll the enormous Gothic buildings at Parliament Hill, canoe the Rideau Canal, or ice skate the frozen waters in winter, and then trek into the wilderness at Gatineau Park.

In Toronto, discover a trendy city with a glittering skyline of soaring skyscrapers. Like Ottawa, there's lots of parks, galleries and museums, such as the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. There's also a chain of little islands in Lake Ontario with alluring golden beaches. Take time to discover the foodie scene in Little Portugal, then go designer shopping at the huge Toronto Eaton Centre mall.

Just be sure to visit the fairytale hilltop castle, Casa Loma. Known as the Limestone City for its beautiful 19th century architecture and Victorian mansions, pretty Kingston nestles on the banks of Lake Ontario. The serene waters offer some of the world's best freshwater sailing and diving with plenty of wrecks to explore. You'll also get to enjoy luxury boat cruises that take in the historical sites, like Kingston City Hall and Fort Henry. Make sure you catch a magical sunset whilst sailing the Thousand Islands.

When To Visit

The province of Ontario is a year round destination with each season providing something different. In the summer, it's hot with daytime highs around 28 degrees Celsius. Autumn brings cooler weather and maple trees bring a riotous wash of red leaves to the spectacular landscape.

In winter, expect lots of snow and temperatures as low as -14 degrees Celsius. It's the perfect season for skiing and snowmobiling. You can also enjoy warming Christmas markets in the major cities. Come spring, the snow begins to melt and wildflowers start to bloom.

Food & Drink

In Ontario expect award-winning restaurants and fine dining at your world class hotel. Begin your day with a buffet breakfast and enjoy international cuisine in the evening. Try authentic Indian curries, classic Italian pastas and Mexican specialities, from tacos to fajitas.

Of course, you'll also get to try the local Canadian cuisine. Sample gourmet versions of poutine, lots of fresh seafood dishes, like tea-smoked scallops and tuna tataki, and prime meats such as bacon wrapped filet mignon. Unwind with cocktails, wines and artisan beers.

Passport & Visas

As with any holiday, it's a good idea to carry some identification with you and to keep a photocopy of your passport. British citizens don't normally need a visa to visit Canada for short stays, but will need to obtain Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling. Visit GOV.UK for more advice.
