Like all wildcats, snow leopards are territorial. Their territories though are quite large. Generally, we prefer to send guests in winter from December to March. However, February and March add an additional dimension to tracking the cat – by sound. This is their breeding time, and they call for their mates in these months. Winter months are better as these animals blend into their environment beautifully and unless they are moving (and even then) they are extremely difficult to see. When there is snow on the ground they tend to contrast against the snow and can be tracked as they leave footprints on the snow. The rock-dry and barren terrain of Ladakh is an extremely difficult environment to see wildlife that has evolved to camouflage in this stark landscape. To summarise – the best time to visit is December to the first ten days of April. However, the best time within that time frame is probably Feb and Mar.
Besides the snow leopard we seek out the following: Tibetan Wolf, Eurasian Lynx, Himalayan Red Fox, Woolly Hare, Himalayan Ibex, Ladakh Uriel, Argali, Blue Sheep, Mountain Weasel, Pika, the Lammergeier (bearded vulture), Golden Eagle, Red-billed and Alpine chough, Griffon Vulture, Magpie, Chukar Partridge, Himalayan Snowcock, Tibetan Partridge, Coal Tit, Güldenstädt's Redstart, Alpine Accentor, Red-fronted Serin and the Brown Dipper.
