Bordering Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Tibet, Yunnan is home the most ethnically diverse population in the country. Undeniably, this is one of China's most fascinating and varied regions. Take a luxury holiday to Yunnan and South West China and encounter rugged mountains, lush rice paddies, ancient villages and a beautiful modern capital known for its temples.
Rice paddies cover a vast portion of Yuanyang, which means you have your pick of walking routes and places to admire the view. One of the best viewpoints is Duoyishu Scenic Area, which provides an astonishing lookout over the terraces. For the best photographs, visit at sunrise when the pools of water change colour in the early morning light.
The historic centre of Lijiang is famed for its winding cobbled back streets, waterways and traditional homes decorated with paper lanterns. Stroll around the banks of the stunning Black Dragon Pool as you gaze at the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the distance, before heading to Zhongyi Market to browse fresh produce and traditional handicrafts.
This natural marvel sits just outside Kunming. Formed millions of years ago, the Stone Forest is a “forest” of ragged, limestone structures. It’s a feast for the eyes and is recognised as a UNESCO heritage site. Wander through these naturally occurring skyscrapers, exploring the many caves and lakes and keeping your eyes peeled for local wildlife.
The beautiful Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be easily reached by cable car and short climb. At its summit, you can admire stunning panoramic views. A trip here, however, wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the surrounding meadows and scenic areas. Gaze up at the mountain peak from a peaceful meadow or the banks of the White Water River.
If you’re staying in Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge is the ideal adventure excursion. This spectacular river canyon is home to the indigenous Naxhi people. You can explore the region on foot via the well-maintained 14 mile hiking trail. With the sheer cliffs soaring above your head and the river rushing below, it’s a genuinely awe-inspiring trek.
