Seattle is located in Washington, the USA’s most northwestern state. Despite its cosmopolitan vibes and thriving commercial centre, Seattle is one pretty city. Even in the heart of Seattle, it’s impossible to escape the great outdoors, as the city includes thousands of acres of parkland and stunning coastlines. Amongst the green, you’ll also find modern, futuristic skyscrapers like the Space Needle, and plenty of gourmet coffee houses - this is, after all, the home of Starbucks.
Travel south to Portland, Oregon and explore the hipster capital of the States. The city centre buzzes with a vibrant cultural scene including excellent performing arts, live music, museums, and world-class restaurants. Portland is also an excellent place for outdoor enthusiasts - sitting on the banks of the Columbia and Willamette rivers, and right at the base of Mount Hood, there are kayaking, boating and fishing activities available, along with year-round skiing and snowboarding.
However, any trip to the Pacific Northwest would be incomplete without venturing into some of its outstanding national parks. See the USA’s deepest lake at Crater Lake National Park, hike the Cascade mountain range in North Cascades National Park, or discover the stunning Puget Sound at the San Juan Islands National Historic Park. On your adventures, you might spy Pacific Northwest wildlife like the grizzly bear or mountain lion.
When To Visit
The Pacific Northwest offers adventure throughout the year. Typically, the weather is mild, with cool, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. Seattle temperatures see lows of 3 degrees Celsius between December to February and highs of 24 degrees Celsius in July and August.
So when you visit depends on how you’d like to spend your holidays: summer is a fantastic time for outdoor activities like hiking, whilst winter brings snowfall to the mountains, and great skiing opportunities at resorts like Mount Hood.
Food & Drink
At your luxury hotel in Portland or Seattle, you’ll find Northwest cuisine which includes plenty of fresh seafood like salmon and shellfish, as well as local game meats like moose and elk. There's also plenty of locally-grown produce including regional specialties like wild mushrooms, fiddleheads, and kale.
The Pacific Northwest also has a fantastic coffee scene and wine industry. In Seattle, you can try Starbucks coffee at its source. And indulge in the bold flavours that American wines are known for, as Washington is America’s second largest wine-producing state.
